Can You Tell The Difference Between A Men's Magazine and a Rapist?

I’ve received a lot of submissions regarding this study in the last few days, and I finally took the time to sit down and read this article on it. It’s pretty graphic, the test part of it anyway, so be warned if you head over to the link.

Basically, a recent study showed that both men and women were unable to reliably determine whether or not selected statements came from British “lad mags” or interviews with convicted rapists. Even more disturbing, when asked (before revealing which statement came from whom) which statements they agreed with, men were more likely to agree with the rapists than with the men’s magazines.

I just want to point out that this is what I’m talking about when I blog about a rape culture. This is exactly it. There’s this overarching belief throughout our society that actual verbal consent is unnecessary, because women are not people with wants and needs, but objects that men have a right to take at their whim. I’ve already gotten Facebook Friday submissions of people reacting to this article, and they are absolutely horrifying. 

This is what we’re talking about, rape culture skeptics. We live in a world where people overwhelmingly agree with and defend the derogatory, violent statements made by men about women, regardless of whether they came from the mouth of a rapist or a the pages of a men’s magazine. Shit needs to change.
