The enemies in the original Parasite Eve were all creepy, imaginative, and wonderfully disgusting.  PEII also had some really great monster designs, but nothing beats your first encounter with a mutated rat.

I like how Aya starts Parasite Eve II in sensible clothes, but once she’s dispatched to investigate monster sightings in the middle of the Mojave desert, she’s all “HOLD UP I GOTTA GET MY MINISKIRT.”

longchamp:

Wow. First time I’ve seen this one. Makes me wonder why there wa never an artbook for Parasite Eve. The Japanese guide books don’t count.

There was the 100% Newtype book. :D I’m pretty sure that’s what this scan is from, too.
The art direction in the original Parasite Eve was perfect. Why can’t Square do this again?

Aya losing her clothes has no point beyond a feeble attempt to titillate, and the way in which her clothes are presented is far more unrealistic than the developers imply. Although players can restore her clothing whenever they are at a terminal, the purpose of this gimmick is purely for fan-service, and does the game no assistance in its effort to represent a purportedly strong female lead positively.

This is not my Aya, not by a long shot. When you take a character so near and dear to many and absolutely destroy what people love about her, it makes it hard to enjoy the game. Adding more insult to injury, Aya’s co-workers treat her like a piece of meat to her face, and she doesn’t stick up for herself. So, while the story had me going, the disservice that they did to Aya Brea is inexcusable.

And while we’re talking about story and characters, I would like to take a moment (or several paragraphs) to express my strong objection to what has become of protagonist Aya Brea. I’m a huge fan of the first Parasite Eve, and Aya is a major reason why it continues to rank highly in my favorite games of all time. She was one of the few game heroines who actually felt totally realistic. Everything about her seemed believable for her role as an NYPD detective, from her practical wardrobe to her dogged resolve and bravery. She was sexy too, and when Mitochondria Eve suddenly attacked the opera she was attending at Carnegie Hall, she was still able to drop enemies cold while wearing a dress and heels. But of course, she changed into jeans and a t-shirt/jacket as soon as she could afterwards, because that’s the practical thing to do if you’re heading into combat. In a game about sentient mitochondria trying to usurp the human race, Aya Brea was as down-to-earth as a character could get.

Needless to say, I was unhappy when Parasite Eve II portrayed her as a miniskirt-clad, machine-gun toting over-sexualized stereotypical caricature of a woman, complete with shower scene. The 3rd Birthday takes the ridiculousness to a new level though – her destructible clothing is particularly cringe-worthy, with her left ass cheek completely exposed at all times unless you constantly pay to have her clothing repaired. Her character has been completely stripped not only of clothes but of personality too, and she’s portrayed as just a mindless yes-woman taking orders without question.

The review closes with a bulleted list of positive and negative highlights. Most issues that fall on either side have to do with gameplay mechanics, but the final negative point is “what have they done to Aya?!”

I’m so glad to see this issue getting more coverage in the gaming press. As a Parasite Eve fan who won’t be buying The 3rd Birthday, I hope this will convince others not to fall for Square Enix’s deceitful marketing.

Regardless of the game being on the PSP, we challenged ourselves to portray Aya in a realistic manner in every aspect of the game. As a result, I think we were able to develop Aya’s distinctive characteristics in a realistic fashion.
